Walking down the aisles of our local Weis Market, you feel proud of yourself…proud for saving money buying wholesome ingredients to make dinners at home. You imagine the family sitting down to dinner together with a freshly cooked meal, just like the meals you remember growing up. You’ve heard that preparing your own meals is both cheaper and more nutritious and you are determined to to not spend another dollar at the drive-thru window.
You look at the shelf and see items that say…
“Less Fat” (usually means more sugar)
“No Sugar” (but filled with artificial sweeteners)
“Gluten Free” (but filled other refined grains AND sugar)
“Organic” (but filled with refined sugar)
“Vegan” (but filled with unhealthy fats and refined sugars)
You feel confused and frustrated. Why is it so hard to make good choices?
The food industry purposely makes it confusing for us to make healthy choices. They steer us to purchase less healthy products made with cheaper ingredients. They know we want to be healthier so they use their money to spend on marketing to steer us to the products that they make appear healthy. They are trying to make money, right?
You can take your health into your own hands by purchasing whole foods.
As Michael Pollan says, “Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.” Would she know what a gummy bear or McRib sandwich is?
Here’s how you can start to take your health into your own hands:
- Avoid those clever labels and do not buy any packaged snack foods
- Read the labels!
- Buy lots of whole fruits and vegetables and find new ways of enjoying them! (see recipe below for starters)
- Don’t get caught up in the minutia…yes, organic is usually better (especially with the dirty dozen), yes some rice is grown in water with pesticides, yes some organic vegetables are grown in undesirable manure, but whole foods still reign above all foods for overall health. They more you eat, the better off you will be.
